Camondo Stairs

A small nice steps with late baroque overtones had been built linking Rue Camondo (Today’s Banker road) where the Bank of Avram Kamondo, one of the most important bankers around Voyvoda Street which was the main street of Galata and Voyvoda Street which is further below, in 1850s: The Camondo stairs (also known as Kamondo stairs).
It is believed that Kamondos who were Jews of Portugal (or Spanish) origin probably immigrated to Istanbul late 18th century after living in various cities of Europe. Although the name of the family which traded internationally previously getting quite rich is first mentioned in Ottoman documents in 1782, however, there isn’t detailed information on the family members and their activities.
