Terziler (Tofre Begadim) Synagogue
The Terziler (Tofre Begadim) Synagogue of the “Ashkenazi” community on one of the side streets connected to Yüksekkaldırım (Banker Road) in Galata is one of the most interesting synagogues in Istanbul, if not the oldest.
In 1893, a largish lot was purchased between the roads of Felek and Banker and "Tofre Bergadim" was built as a masonry structure as attached raw houses with donations from the community.
The main rectangular shaped space entered through a rather high crowned door from Felek Sokak with three steps symbolizing three professions is three-storeys high. Bema and Ehal Akodeş stand under the star of David. The three directional seats dedicated to men and the women’s balcony standing at a separate place are the main elements of this design.
Since the number of community members decreased, it was decided in 1964 that joint services should be held at the Austrians Temple founded by the higher income groups previously in Yüksekkaldırım. Only offices taking on the task of managing the community have remained in Tofre Bergadim. Although it was decided that the synagogue should serve as an art gallery under the Galata events in 1998, this new function has not been able to gain continuity.
