BERLIN-MITTE

Information About Mitte District

  • Mitte is the first and most central borough of Berlin.
  • Mitte encompasses Berlin's historic core and includes some of the most important tourist sites of Berlin like Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag and Berlin Hauptbahnhof, most of which were in former East Berlin.
  • Mitte (German for "middle", "centre") is located in the centre of Berlin along the Spree River. It borders on Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in the west, Reinickendorf in the north, Pankow in the east, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in the southeast, and Tempelhof-Schöneberg in the southwest.
  • The former Mitte district had been established by the 1920 Greater Berlin Act and comprised large parts of the historic city around Alt-Berlin and Cölln. Brandenburg Gate was the western exit at the Berlin city boundary until 1861.
  • The present-day borough of Mitte consists of six localities: Mitte (the former Mitte borough),Moabit,Hansaviertel,Tiergarten(the former Tiergarten borough),Wedding,Gesundbrunnen(the former Wedding borough).
  • Total area is 39.47 km2.
  • Total population is 332,919.
  • The current Mayor is Christian Hanke.

 

Mitte became the twin town of Beyoğlu on the 7th October 2008.

Preparation Meeting of LOGO! Europe Locals Go Europe Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility Project
18-20 January 2012, Berlin/Germany

LOGO! Locals go Europe Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility Project is an EU project funded by National Agency of Germany and coordinated by 12 municipalities of Berlin. The partners of the project are  Turkey/Istanbul-Beyoğlu, Italy/Bolzano, Italy/Rome, United Kingdom/Liverpool, France/Paris, Belgium/Brussels, Poland/Stettin, Netherlands/Amsterdam-Amstelveen. Within the framework of the project executives that are working for the local governments of Berlin will have the opportunity to live and work in the city they select for 4 weeks time. The host will schedule the participants’ programme and arrange their meetings with the departments and diretorates that the participants would like to meet.
As being the partner of this fruitful project, Beyoğlu Municipality participated to the coordination meeting of the project and had the opportunity to know the participants, plan the draft agenda and reply their questions.
Within The Scope Of The 3rd Intercultural Art Dialogues
10-20 June 2012, Beyoğlu/Istanbul

  • Zirkus International Juggler and Dance group from Berlin- Mitte participated to the festival from Berlin. They performed acrobatics performances and hiphop dance showa during 3 days at Galata Tower Square.

 

LOGO! Europe Locals Go Europe Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility Project
 2-29 September 2012, Beyoğlu/Istanbul

Within the framework of Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility project of Berlin, 5 experts who are working for the different local governments of Berlin visited Beyoğlu Municipality, learned about the different departments and services of Beyoğlu Municipality. There were 8 partners from different countries which the civil servants were able to discover and know the city and the services/works of the municipality. The partners of the project were 12 District Municipality of Berlin, Turkey/Istanbul-Beyoğlu, Italy/Bolzano, Italy/Rome, United Kingdom/Liverpool, France/Paris, Belgium/Brussels, Poland/Stettin, Netherlands/Amsterdam-Amstelveen.
An official program was scheduled for the participants during their stay in Istanbul. They visited and had meetings with urban development, social aid departments, youth center, Kefken Summer Camp of Beyoğlu Municipility and had also meetings with the Directorate For Culture And Education, TEGV and different NGO’s during one month.

The Closing Event of LOGO!
14-15 February 2013, Berlin/Germany

After the Locals go Europe 2012 mobility project came to an end for 2012, a closing event realized for the evaluation of the project and for being able to learn the experiences of the participants. There were 8 groups of participants who made presentations. Many colleagues from district municipalities of Berlin and project partner cities participated to the closing event.  Mayor of Berlin - Mitte, Mayor of Tempelhof-Schöneberg and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf also participated to the closing ceremony.

The Exchange of Social Workers
9-13 September 2013, Beyoğlu/Istanbul

An official delegation from twin town Berlin-Mitte made a visit to Beyoğlu from September 9th through 13th. The delagtion including 10 professionals; 5 Socialworker for youth work, 2 Social worker from the youth department (for the coordination of youth work and youth culture), 1 teacher, 1 school director and the person who is in charge youth projects in Berlin- Mitte Municipality Youth Department. This visit was an opportunity for the two municipalities for the planning the further youth exchange programmes and for being able to get to know each other’s services. During their stay they had very fruitful meetings and visited Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center and Kefken Summer Camp.

Youth Exchange Project funded by Beyoğlu and Mitte Municipalities
28 September-9 October 2013, Beyoğlu/Istanbul

 

Within the scope of youth cooperation of Beyoğlu and Mitte, 10 youngsters and 3 advisors were welcomed in Istanbul and Kefken. The youngsters enjoyed the sea and good weather in Kefken for 7 days with the Turkish youngsters who were involved to the project. Besides they had fruitful workshops together. Then they stayed in Istanbul for 5 days and explored the city with the accompaniment of Turkish youngsters. They had a very nice time together. The project will go on and will take place in Berlin in 2014.

Official Visit of the Council Members of Berlin-Mitte Municipality
22 March 2011, Beyoğlu/Istanbul

An official delegation leaded by the council member of Berlin-Mitte Bilkay Öney and Murat Kalmış from Baden Wurttemberg visited Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan in his office and discussed on future cooperations.

 

1st Berlin-Istanbul Festival in Berlin Potsdamer Platz
28 May-2 June 2011, Berlin/Germany
The 1st Berlin-Istanbul Festival was held in the capital of Germany, Berlin with the aim of enhancing further collaborations between Turkey and Germany. The festival which attracted great attention was realized by Forum on Intercultural Dialogue Association (FID) with the support of the Mayor of Berlin-Mitte Christian Hanke and the Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan. Mayor Demircan participated to the opening which took place in Berlin Potsdamer Platz. During the ceremony, Mayor of Beyoglu Ahmet Misbah Demircan hold a speech at Potsdamer Platz where the festival took place during 4 days.

2nd Berlin-Istanbul Festival in Berlin
25-28 May 2012

2nd Berlin-Istanbul festival realized in Berlin Potsdamer Platz as last year. It was realized by Forum on Intercultural Dialogue Association (FID) with the support of Mayor Hanke and Mayor Demircan. The opening ceremony of festival which took place on May 25th, opened and visited by Mayor Demircan, Mayor Hanke, The Ambassador of The Republic of Turkey in Berlin Hüseyin Avni Karslıoğlu, The Consul General of The Republic of Turkey in Berlin Mustafa Pulat, the President of FID Ercan Karakoyun and many Turkish and German visitors.

Within the scope of the festival Turkish and German traditional art, culture, dance and food were presented. Many Turkish artists from Beyoğlu performed their arts in their booths. The festival area were visited by 10.000 people.
